The County Government of Kakamega is working to meet the targets and timelines to ensure completion of BuKhungu Stadium by 2021. Governor Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya was on Wednesday briefed by the facilitating committee on progress so far made before Phase 2 kicks off.

The multi-million shilling project aims to achieve international standing by the time of its completion. Among the key considerations for the development are environmental and economic sustainability, capacity and technology.

Bukhungu Stadium will have a capacity of 25,000 seats, conference facilities, indoor gymnasiums, a recreational park, a swimming pool, media centre, practice pitches, banks and business shops among other facilities, the stadium is expected to meet international standards not only for sports and recreational activities but also meetings and conferences.

Construction works to usher in the second phase commence in January 2019. Governor Oparanya Said the stadium will have the capacity to host international games and transform Kakamega County. The stadium is quickly becoming one of the prominent land marks in the Western County of Kakamega.
